A brand new house for discerning clients in the heart of Dorset. We were originally approached by the clients and their interior designer to progress a certainly interesting concept that they had developed together. Using a very collaborative working process, we obtained planning permission and progressed detailed designs onto site.
The solution to building a house that is curved was to use a modern method of construction – Insulated Concrete Formwork – where two “leaves” of polystyrene are tied together with plastic ties and then pump filled with concrete. The polystyrene forms both the formwork (hence the name) and the insulation for the external walls. The end result is an extremely airtight, well insulated construction which almost meets Passivhaus standards.
