Architect: Brian Watts
Project Completed: October 2015
Contractor: WRE Andrews & Son
Though not listed, this charming cob and thatched cottage sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty, and a sensitive approach was required to its extension and restoration.
The project replaced poor quality single storey flat roof extensions with a new two storey extension providing a new kitchen with bedroom and 1st floor bathroom over. The design uses local vernacular materials and an oak frame complementing the render and thatch of the original building.
Despite nearly doubling the floor area of the cottage, the extension is carefully modelled to maintain its modest character, and views into the site from surrounding farmland remain largely unchanged. Repairs and alterations to the original building were carried out using traditional techniques employing natural breathable materials.
