The Walled Garden pre-prep school is located at the North East corner of the listed walled garden of Sandroyd School. It is designed to accommodate four classrooms and school hall, along with staff rooms, reception and associated service accommodation.
The building straddles the original wall structure which forms the spine wall running the length of the school. To the North, solid brick walls with stone banding present a welcoming yet secure facade to parents dropping off their children, whilst the south elevation into the walled garden is largely glazed, opening the classrooms to the garden and washing the interior with light. Deep overhanging eaves shade the classrooms in summer months and reduce solar gain. This section of the building is designed with north lights sitting over the spine wall. These windows are electrically operated and allow natural cross ventilation of the classrooms. The roof is finished using zinc sheeting with standing seams, laid on recycled spun glass insulation.
The project won the Salisbury Civic Society award
for the best new building in 2005.
