Architect: Brian Watts

Project Completed: 2019

Developer: Shean & Hare Construction Limited

Major refurbishment and extension of Grade II* listed St. Andrew’s Church, Donhead St. Andrew. King Alfred’s daughter was the Abbess of Shaftesbury and owned the land on which the first St. Andrew’s Church was built; a Saxon arch remains within the Chancel.

The scheme remedied long term defects in the fabric including re-roofing and replacement of cement and gypsum plaster with lime, but also included the removal of pews and platforms from the Nave and aisles, construction of a new Limecrete floor with underfloor heating and a beautiful local limestone finish. A major new lighting and audio scheme was designed and installed by Anthony J. Smith (Gloucester) Limited and new furniture provided by Treske.

The extension provides a parish room, kitchen and accessible WC, and was designed with octagonal plan to sit neatly between Chancel and north aisle respecting the existing features of the church. Reclaimed and new greensand stone is employed for the principal elevations with zinc cladding on sections linking to the original walls of the church.
